Can we automate even if the space is limited? Here comes the solution for compact packaging lines

19 May 2025

"We also want to automate, but the factory is so small that there is no place to put the machine."
This is a sentence that many small and medium-sized enterprises often say when they come into contact with packaging automation. Especially in the food, daily chemical, pharmaceutical and other industries, old factories and limited space have become important factors hindering the upgrading of production lines.

But in reality, not all automation equipment requires a "large and complete" space layout. The compact and modularly designed packaging line is the breakthrough to solve the problem of "want to upgrade, but no place".

❶ What automation capabilities are limited by limited space?
Insufficient space not only affects the layout of equipment, but also brings the following practical problems:

Observed Issue Explanation of Impact
Unable to deploy a complete packaging line Insufficient space for infeed, outfeed, and maintenance access
Operators can’t approach or maintain equipment easily Limited safety clearance, hard to respond to malfunctions
Disorganized material flow with frequent backtracking Inefficient manual handling due to convoluted logistics paths
Equipment interferes with each other, unstable operation Cross-interference from vibration, heat, dust, affecting performance and hygiene

❷ Three key design principles for compact packaging lines
Maike Intelligent Equipment Co., Ltd. has summarized three core strategies for "space-friendly" packaging lines in multiple project practices:

Design Strategy Practical Implementation
Modular unit integration Combine functions (e.g., sorting + packaging, cartoning + sealing)
Vertical layout thinking Use vertical space (e.g., top feeding, bottom discharge)
Quick-plug detachable structure Easy to move or disassemble for cleaning and maintenance

❸ Application case: Complete material sorting + packaging + boxing in an 8-meter space
When providing an upgrade solution for a leisure food customer in an old factory area, Maike Intelligent Equipment Co., Ltd. adopted the "zigzag layout + double-layer platform for loading and unloading" design to compress the three links of material sorting, automatic packaging and boxing into a space less than 8 meters long:

The equipment adopts dual-channel logic to improve the production capacity per unit area;

The material direction is changed from the traditional "U-shaped" to the "Z-shaped" zigzag line to avoid backflow;

The operation interface and maintenance points are all facing the same side, which is convenient for personnel inspection;

The boxing area adopts a wheeled quick-disassembly structure, and space can be freed up for temporary storage during holidays.

✅ Summary:
Limited space is not the end of automation, but the starting point of lean layout.

Through functional integration, structural innovation, and logistics optimization, Maike Intelligent Equipment Co., Ltd. has helped many "small and difficult to reform" enterprises realize packaging line automation.

In the future, equipment will no longer be "the bigger the better", but "the more adaptable, the more effective".
